This triple LP set was originally released in conjunction with the movie and therefore it's also called Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More but it's more commonly referred to as Woodstock I. The album was very successful and reached #1 at the Billboard Pop Album charts in 1970[1]. It was re-released as a remastered double CD album on August 12, 1994.
The tracks from this album as well as tracks from the follow-up Woodstock II and additional bonus material made it onto the box set Woodstock - Three Days of Peace and Music (1994). The only difference is that all stage announcements were removed so that most of the tracks are now shorter on the box set.
Recording Notes[]
The songs "Sea of Madness" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and "Coming into Los Angeles" by Arlo Guthrie weren't recorded in Woodstock at all[2]. It is generally believed that "Sea of Madness" was actually recorded from a performance at the Fillmore East on September 19 or 20, while "Coming into Los Angeles" was recorded at the Troubador at a later, unspecified date. However, there is even controversy about this, with several other possibilities mentioned by Stefano Frollano, author of The Woodstock Project. [3] Nevertheless, they've made their way onto this release. Their original Woodstock versions were included in the 38-CD box set Woodstock - Back to the Garden.
